It is important to know that Canada cannot guarantee entry or exit across the borders of other countries if you have X in your passport. There are only six other countries in the world that allow X in passports. To do this, you can request a name change certificate. You must be over 16 years of age and have lived in Ontario for 12 months. In Ontario, you can change the gender of your birth registration to F M or X. It is your responsibility to ensure that you can safely enter other countries. Many countries that do not have the same laws as Canada may not recognize X as gender, and if this is stated in your passport, there is a risk of discrimination, abuse or violence when crossing international borders. Each sex change applicant must submit different forms depending on their age. For applicants aged 12 and over, complete the “Adults and minors aged 12 and over” application form. For applicants under the age of 12, complete the “Minors under 12” application and attach a “Confirmation of sex change by a doctor or psychologist” form. For many two-spirit, non-binary, and trans people, the information on their legal documents does not match their lived identity.
If so, you may want to consider matching your documents to your gender and name. You must appoint an executor or substitute decision-maker, a trusted person who respects your decisions and carries out your wishes. This person does not need to be a family member. The person you choose can indicate your gender to medical staff and a funeral home, or fill out the declaration of death themselves to ensure your identity is respected.
