Similarly, Tim Worstall, a fellow at the Adam Smith Institute, argued that Oxfam America`s reports on corporate tax evasion did not take into account the different tax statuses of companies, distorting the data. [40] Affiliate business meetings are convened as needed and provide a space where affiliates collectively agree on matters that directly or indirectly affect their individual legal and fiduciary obligations. Oxfam estimates that at least 75,000 refugees a year should be allowed to enter the US [27] and has called on the US Supreme Court to repeal President Trump`s executive measure banning nationals of certain countries from entering the US. [28] Similarly, Oxfam America called President Trump`s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which granted legal status to certain categories of illegal immigrants by executive order, “morally boring.” [29] Oxfam also claimed that the US was “deporting Central Americans to their deaths” and instead advocated an increase in the $750 billion aid package in Central America in 2016. [30] Oxfam did not report any of the incidents to the Haitian authorities because “it was extremely unlikely that any action would be taken.” [95] Although Oxfam disclosed details of the incident to the Charities Commission, the commission revealed after the Times investigation that it had never received Oxfam`s final investigation report and that Oxfam “neither detailed the exact allegations nor provided any indication of possible sexual crimes against minors.” A spokesperson for the commission commented: “We expect the charity to give us assurances that it has learned from past incidents.” [96] Oxfam later stated that it had not provided the Commission with details other than “inappropriate sexual behaviour” because the use of prostitutes was not illegal in Haiti. [43] Oxfam and the Bodleian Library, OxfordOxfam donated its archives to the Bodleian Library in 2012, and with the generous support of the Wellcome Trust, a four-and-a-half-year project is currently underway to catalogue this vast collection and make it more accessible. Cataloguing will take place in three 18-month phases, with a slice of the archive available to researchers at the end of each phase. The first selection of documents will be accessible by June 2014, and the entire historical archive will be available for research in June 2017.
For more information on what will be available at each stage, visit the Bodleian Library website. Archivists welcome external requests outside of this release schedule, but cannot guarantee that they will be able to assist. The Board of Directors of the OIS consists of the Executive Director, the President of each subsidiary and the President of the IO. The presidents of member organizations are voting members and are not remunerated. The Executive Directors and the President of the IO are all non-voting members. The Council also elects the Vice-President and the Treasurer from among its voting members. The Board is responsible for ensuring that Oxfam International is accountable, transparent and fit for purpose. [38] In 2009/10, it had approximately 77 employees (including secondments and temporary assistance).
It is funded by contributions from member organizations and has an operating budget of $8.7 million. [39] The company`s legal name is Stichting Oxfam International. [40] After the lawsuit was filed, the SEC continued: A few months later, in August 2012, the SEC voted to issue a final settlement to implement Section 1504. However, after a legal challenge by the American Petroleum Institute and other industry groups, the rule was referred to the SEC in July 2013. In September 2014, EarthRights and Oxfam filed a lawsuit again to force the SEC to end the regulation. On February 14, Trump signed the resolution and repealed the rule. Because this was a rule that Congress specifically required of the SEC, the SEC still has a legal obligation to issue a new rule within one year.
Diana Kearney, Senior Legal Counsel at Oxfam America, said: “We are delighted that Judge Sullivan`s decision puts an end to the racist and illegal policies that have sacrificed the lives of vulnerable children, women and men on the political altar. While nothing can erase the incredible violence that millions of refugees have suffered at the hands of this cruel and misguided police, we welcome the renewed opportunity for the United States to grant asylum to refugees and restore respect for the rule of law. In February 2015, the Israeli NGO Regavim published a report stating that the European Union had illegally financed the construction of houses. Oxfam and other NGOs participated in the project. Oxfam defended the construction “for humanitarian reasons”. In September, the district court issued an order agreeing with Oxfam that the SEC had failed to comply with its legal obligations and therefore required the SEC to meet a new timetable for rule-making. In October 2009, Oxfam was accused by the Israeli NGO Regavim of assisting Palestinians in illegal activities in Kiryat Arba, including water theft. Oxfam has denied its involvement.
[66] Oxfam America advocates a center-left agenda[3] citing inequality as a collective justification to support left-wing domestic taxation[4], climate policy,[5] immigration policy,[6] and labor policy,[7] among others. In addition, the Panel promotes the concept of “global citizenship”[8], which serves as the basis for its advocacy for federal spending on foreign aid,[9] international institutions that can override domestic policies,[10] and social justice trade agreements that would sacrifice market demands to reduce global poverty and transform global trade into an economic redistributive agenda. [11] Oxfam`s global governance structure consists of an international council and a multi-stakeholder assembly, with affiliate business meetings convened as necessary. This architecture is the result of a comprehensive reform process launched in 2017 to bring our ongoing commitment to strengthening the global balance and diversity of feminist voices and leadership to our governing bodies. It was driven by a desire to strengthen accountability and transparency and become a more relevant, resilient and impactful organization in the future. Oxfam America supports international agreements that take precedence over U.S. law. In 2015, Oxfam America`s head of climate policy wrote a commentary for Al Jazeera America expressing support for an international climate agreement that would “hopefully” increase climate-related payments to poor countries and impose a sharp reduction in emissions.
