However, the method of tying people to curved trees, which are then allowed to shrink and tear the individual into pieces, is mentioned by several travelers to nineteenth-century Persia. British diplomat James Justinian Morier visited the Shah in 1808 as a special envoy, and Morier wrote the following about the criminal justice system in effect at the time:[26] An example of a greatly intensified execution is the fate of Bastian Karnhars on July 16, 1600. Karnhars was convicted of committing 52 different murders, including the rape and murder of 8 women and the murder of a child whose heart he allegedly ate for black magic rituals. Particularly in Southeast Asia, execution by trained elephants was a form of death penalty that had been practiced for several centuries. The techniques used to execute the convicted person varied widely, but sometimes involved the elephant dismembering the victim with sharp blades attached to his feet. The Muslim traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited Delhi in the 1330s, left the following eyewitness account of this particular type of execution by elephants:[3] Dismemberment was a form of death penalty for those convicted of high treason in the Korean kingdom of the Joseon Dynasty.
