where governments and institutions are accountable even to the weakest among us; where those most in need of legal services receive the highest quality support to improve their lives; where justice and equity for all, including the poor, are the norm, not only in our courts, but in all communities; and where communities thrive on democratic principles. But the agency has failed to identify critical habitat for them, as required by the Endangered Species Act. Today`s agreement resolves a lawsuit filed by the center in 2021, when habitat protection was more than five years overdue. Unique species, including tiny sac-winged bats, bright orange and yellow tree snails, and beautiful eight-pointed butterflies, are also endangered due to small population sizes, invasive species, and limited range. Some species in Guam and other islands north of the Mariana Islands are under severe threat from military expansion associated with the relocation of 5,000 U.S. Marines from Okinawa. “With everything that`s happening with military build-up, we run the risk of losing important parts of our culture. We are the people of the land and when our native plants and animals thrive, we thrive,” said Frances Meno, a local Yo`åmte or traditional healer. “Without them, there is no future. “Without critical habitat designations, native species such as the eight-pointed Mariana butterfly, which is unique to the Mariana Islands, would be lost, and with them irrecoverable aspects of our native ecosystem and culture,” said lawyer Julian Aguon of Blue Ocean Law. “As Indigenous peoples, we stand up for our loved ones other than humans.” “I`m relieved that these 23 beautiful Pacific Island species, found nowhere else on Earth, are finally getting critical habitat protection,” said Maxx Phillips, Hawaii`s director and attorney for the center. “This is a great victory, because endangered and threatened species whose critical habitat is protected by the state are twice as likely to recover as those that do not. Protecting the places these unique plants and animals need to survive is critical to our fight against the extinction crisis.
