A complainant dropped her case, citing privacy and security concerns, after two district judges ordered her and 12 other plaintiffs to resubmit their names. But another woman filed a brand new lawsuit against Watson on Wednesday, with her name included in her initial complaint. Before this latest lawsuit, all the women who filed a lawsuit against Watson originally did so like Jane Does. Although the judges` decisions mention only 13 complainants, the others have voluntarily identified themselves. The latest move comes just days after a New York Times report that Watson had hired at least 66 different massage therapists (including the 24 plaintiffs in the lawsuits) within 17 months between 2019 and 2021. Joining the Houston Texans as an additional defendant seems like an obvious step to grab public attention and increase plaintiffs` room for settlement. The latest trial comes nearly two weeks after a Harris County grand jury, which includes Houston, failed to charge Watson with criminal charges related to allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Harris County filed nine complaints against Watson on that grand jury. Unlike an official law enforcement investigation, Friel and his team have no subpoena power, cannot force prosecutors or witnesses to cooperate, and may not have access to police and legal documents.
Buzbee said his clients would comply with the NFL`s investigation into the case “to the extent possible, given our civil obligations.” After the announcement Thursday that Watson and the NFL had agreed to an 11-game suspension and a $5 million fine as part of a settlement of his disciplinary case, the only remaining legal issue for the Cleveland Browns quarterback is an unresolved lawsuit. “In the few days since Mr. Watson learned the identity of his accusers, his legal team has already found evidence that many of the allegations in this business attack are simply not true or accurate,” Watson`s legal team wrote in its response. “The NFL has a troubling history of empowerment and apology for women`s abuse, and unfortunately, this is just the latest example,” said victim rights lawyer Michelle Simpson Tuegel. Browns officials are telling survivors that the chance of winning more football games is greater than the 22 women who bravely made serious allegations of abuse against Watson. The Texans` owner`s personal lawyer, Cal McNair, has requested mediation between Watson`s legal teams and the 22 women who sued the quarterback in civilian court over allegations of sexual misconduct and sexual assault. Watson`s legal team, led by attorney Rusty Hardin, cites friends and family members of the plaintiffs, as well as security guards at various spas, in its claims. But the answer names no one but Watson and the plaintiffs. In a statement, Hardin said Buzbee was hampering efforts to investigate the allegations by not sharing the names of the accusers with Watson`s legal team, which at the time was defending the quarterback against 16 civil lawsuits. Hardin also said his office identified a complainant and accused her of trying to blackmail Watson. After nearly a year and a half of accusations, denials, legal wrangling and speculation, the future of Deshaun Watson`s football has finally found clarity.
In the woman`s case, Watson said in court documents that after a session with Watson, the woman “laughed and appeared in a good mood,” according to a spa security guard. She also told several family members that she would massage Watson again, according to Watson`s legal team. Buzbee said he would continue to discuss the remaining lawsuit with Watson`s legal team. Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that “it had been developing for some time” that Watson had not moved to the Dolphins. Miami wanted Watson`s legal situation resolved in order to strike a deal, the sources said. It`s still not nearby, so trading today before the deadline was never likely. The Carolina Panthers, who were originally mentioned as potential trading partners, would no longer be in the mix two weeks ago. Buzbee had previously announced that 30 women who had accused the Texans of ignoring allegations against their former star quarterback had settled their legal claims against the team. Another woman is expected to identify herself by Thursday after a hearing on the matter was cancelled Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesman for Watson`s legal team.
“Now, with the exception of one last civil trial, he can look at it and say it has closed the door on this case, at least at trial,” said David Ring, a California-based attorney who is not affiliated with the lawsuits and has represented victims of sexual assault. “In terms of the court of public opinion and how the fans react to him, that`s something he`s still going to handle, I think.” “There are obviously other legal approaches that are being made, whether it`s through civil lawsuits,” Goodell said at NFL owners` meetings Tuesday. “Obviously, the police also investigated. We do not have full access to this information at this stage, and we pride ourselves on not interfering, on being as cooperative as possible to ensure we get all the facts. Nia Smith, the plaintiff in the most recent case, is represented by attorney Buzbee, like all the other women who are suing Watson in civil court. Like the previous 21 civil lawsuits, the recent civil lawsuit against Watson alleges that he was wearing minimal coverage on his naked body and aggressively ordered the woman to massage his anus and groin. Trade negotiations between the Texans and Dolphins over Watson have intensified. The Panthers are also expected to be involved in trade negotiations. The deadline for negotiations is November 2.
“Since the plaintiff`s attorney filed the lawsuit anonymously, Mr. Watson`s attorney can only speculate on the plaintiff`s identity,” Hardin wrote in the filing. Yet it would be completely irresponsible for Mr Watson or his defence team to speculate publicly about this. The risk of making a mistake is simply too high. A misidentified person would immediately and unintentionally be drawn into a public media frenzy. As such, if Mr. Watson ever has a chance to defend himself adequately, he can no longer refrain from the court requiring the plaintiff to identify himself as required by law. Watson still faces 22 active civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and sexual misconduct during massage dates.
Watson`s lawyers filed their response Monday to the 22 civil lawsuits accusing the quarterback of sexual assault and misconduct, denying all allegations and, in particular, attacking the credibility of 16 plaintiffs. In an interview with The Athletic, Buzbee denied that the FBI is investigating one of his clients for extortion. The complaints against Watson allege: (a) civil assault and (b) intentional infliction of emotional stress that allegedly violated Section 22.01(a)(1) of the Texas Criminal Code; 22.012; and 42.07. In the two cases in which the plaintiffs alleged watson forced them to have oral sex, the complaints also include a third plea of sexual assault in violation of the Texas Penal Code ยง 22.01(a)(3). Hardin said Watson, who faces 22 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct and sexual assault, has yet to meet with NFL investigators because the league doesn`t want to interfere in the ongoing criminal investigation. The lawyer representing the 22 women, Tony Buzbee, confirmed to The Athletic on August 13 that 10 of them had met with NFL investigators and that an 11th was scheduled to do so. The Texans told the NYT in a statement that they first learned of the allegations against Watson in March 2021, that they cooperated with investigators and that they would “continue to do so.” The NFL has interviewed 10 of the plaintiffs who accuse Watson of sexual assault and sexual misconduct as part of its investigation into the case, confirmed Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing 22 of the clients who filed a civil lawsuit against Watson. The 22 plaintiffs worked as independent private massage therapists and claim Watson contacted them via social media to hire them for a massage session. But Watson wasn`t the only one involved in litigation.
