The Financial Rights Legal Centre is a community legal centre specialising in financial services, including consumer credit, banking, debt collection and insurance.

It is the only centre of its kind in New South Wales and one of the few centres in Australia that fully integrates hotline and financial advice with legal advice and representation. The Financial Rights Legal Centre also manages the Insurance Law Service, a national service specialising in consumer insurance advisory services. As a community legal centre, the Financial Rights Legal Centre is largely funded by the government and independently managed by a volunteer management committee. We focus in particular on issues that affect vulnerable and disadvantaged consumers. We offer a well-integrated combination of information, advice, case handling and education to help consumers with their financial burden. We also conduct research and collect data from our many consumer contacts to advocate for changes in legislation and industry practices for the benefit of consumers. We employ both financial advisors and lawyers to provide the best service to our clients. The Financial Rights Legal Centre organizes workshops and forums on various consumer issues for financial advisors, community workers, legal aid lawyers, community lawyers and other relevant government employees. In certain circumstances, we may determine that an appellant is raising an important legal issue in relation to a loan or other banking service, such as that a lender or its representative has failed to comply with the law or has behaved unfairly towards the consumer. In such cases, we may agree to take a closer look at an appellant`s case.

Please note that you will not be able to speak to a lawyer by calling the administrative management and that we do not provide legal advice in response to email correspondence. We provide free telephone legal advice to NSW consumers on credit, debt and banking. However, we cannot advise companies. The following case study provides an example of the kind of legal advice the Financial Rights Legal Centre can provide to its clients – something our lawyers can and cannot do. Our qualified lawyers and financial advisors are available to provide free, independent and confidential advice to individuals struggling with a range of financial and consumer issues. When deciding whether or not to offer additional support, our lawyers will prioritize disadvantaged consumers. However, simply not being able to pay your debts is not a legal matter. Priority will be given to clients who are economically disadvantaged and/or have difficulty obtaining redress due to poor English language skills, illness or disability.

As a general rule, the centre can only help in situations where loans have been taken out for personal, non-business purposes. In some cases, the center`s lawyers may be able to help people who have guaranteed or co-borrowed a loan as part of a business loan for a partner or family member, but who were not directly involved in the business themselves. The Centre is also not in a position to assist with investment loans. In some cases, the Financial Rights Legal Centre accepts a client`s recommendation and only deals with their case. Often it is appropriate for a worker to stay involved. The extent of this involvement may vary from a lawyer at a regional community legal centre representing a client and receiving instruction from our centre counsel to the situation in which we are handling the case but asking the employee to obtain documents and explanations from the client in accordance with our instructions.
