Short-term commitment: Telephone helplines operated by phone, email and live chat allow LIFT employees to answer questions from anyone with a family law case in New York City, including the elderly, disabled, and otherwise housebound; military personnel abroad; and imprisoned parents. Provides free counselling services to litigants seeking advice on paternity, child support, custody, visitation or guardianship issues. Educational resources: The legal resource guides, which cover nearly 40 different family law topics and are available in eight different languages, are written in an easy-to-read question and answer format and available in courthouses. Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT) is an innovative not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering self-represented litigants with compassionate legal information and advice to successfully represent themselves in family court. LIFT has been providing legal resource guides and assistance to New York family court clients since 1996. These legal resource guides have been adapted for practice in the family courts of the fifth judicial district. Now, family court clients in Onondaga, Oneida, Jefferson, Herkimer, Oswego and Lewis counties can access legal resource guides that apply to their courts. These legal guides can be found in family courts and law libraries in Onondaga, Oneida, Jefferson, Herkimer, Oswego and Lewis counties.
